Summer Club '23

PSC Summer Club goes from strength to strength!

Our Summer Club this year was probably the best ever for our younger members.

With 18 children between the ages of 9 and 14 signed up for the week, we had a real cross section of ages and abilities, which our leader John Thornton somehow managed to sort into three well-balanced teams. It made for a real competitive edge to the week's activities.

With a rather changeable start, weather-wise, on the first Monday, following registration, introductions and an itinerary briefing, our team of volunteers got things underway with a Topper paddling race from the pontoon. Very soon the kids forgot their inhibitions and really gelled into their teams. There's nothing like getting wet together to break the Ice!!

During the course of the week enthusiasm grew to almost fever pitch as the kids were given the opportunity to experience so many activities. Not only on the water, but onshore as well learning about the weather, tides, sea state, boat rigging and sailing techniques including boat handing and sail trimming. As usual the model boat making and raft building were as popular as ever, and racing them was noisy and highly competitive. By popular demand the crabbing competition went ahead again this year - always a great distraction at low water.

As for the sailing, under the careful watchful eyes and instruction of our group of excellent Assistant Instructors, both complete beginners and our more experienced cadets went from strength to strength, gaining in confidence and ability.

As usual the sail over to Hardway Sailing Club was a huge success, with a mix of dinghies and power boats making the crossing in what proved to be quite challenging windy conditions some of our more adventurous sailors even managed sailing with spinnakers for the first time.

A great big 'thank you' to everyone who put in so much of their time to make the week such a big hit with our younger sailors After all, they're the Club's future!
