Dinghy racing

Classes and fleets

At Portchester we do not prescribe or promote any specific class of dinghy, but have regular varied fleet of participants including; Topper, RS Feva, RS Vision, RS Aero, Solo, ILCA/Laser ( 4.7, Radial and full rigs), Finn, Laser 2000 and RS400's.
Throughout the season we run a number of race series for handicap racing using Portsmouth yardstick ratings.

Racing area
Our main racing area is accessible from 3 hours pre to 4 hours post high water. On occasions where tides are not favourable, courses may be set within Portchester Creek, the main navigable channel stretching from Port Solent down the harbour.

With the sailing area available we can set courses to suit all wind directions, state of the tide and competing dinghies, utilising the clubs seasonal marks and other fixed marks within the area. The race start and finish is run from the comfort of our purpose build race hut within club grounds offering a commanding view over looking the shore line and across the start/finish line.

Race Series and Cup Events
We hold regular racing throughout the season on Wednesday and Saturdays (where high tide allows we run 2 races back to back) which make up our main race series, with Cup races, Regatta weekends, Pursuit races and more on Bank Holidays and Weekends. For our full racing calendar see Events for more detail on dates and times.

Signing on
Those participating in each race need to sign on in the Start Hut, where the OOD is located to start and run the racing. There is no requirement to sign off when back ashore.
If you are just going for a sail whilst racing is taking place and would like the club rib to keep an eye our for you, just let the OOD know, along with your sail number.

Race support duty roles
To run the racing there are a number of duty roles that we need to fill, from the OOD to RIB crews on the water. For details on the roles what is required click here.
