Angling

The Angling Section of the Portchester Sailing Club has been a part of the Club's offer since 1969 and has developed into a thriving group of anglers of all ages and abilities.

In the process the section has worked with the Angling Trust and Royal Yachting Association and gained Club Mark status with the Angling Trust in 2013.

Club Mark is important to the section because it recognises the hard work of Members' in planning an active and fun programme with fully licenced coaches, supports the Club in building a diverse activity programme.

Young People: we have some 20 junior Anglers that are supported by Coaches and the Club's angling community to enjoy sea fishing from shore and boat In a safe and enjoyable environment that sees them landing fish regularly. By using Angling Trust Licenced Coaches we are able to ensure that we use the latest approaches to providing our young anglers with the information, knowledge and experience to grow in their angling. This is reflected in the structured training and provision of loan tackle while they learn in line with Club Mark.

Ladies: our Ladies group is a small and friendly group looking to build on their success and grow in the future. The Ladies compete regularly with a smattering of placed results and a 7lbs smooth hound being among their recent successes. They are regular supporters of all of our programmed events and would welcome new anglers of all abilities.

Competition: Our flagship event the Portchester Open is held annually after October and attracts some 200 plus anglers from all over the country, recognised as a Penn Qualifier. Additionally we have a range of competitions within the Club and with other clubs (coming in the near future). Our events cover youth, ladies, cruisers and open competitions to allow all to take part. These encourage anglers of all abilities to try different approaches to angling and allow them to build on their experience as well as some friendly competition. For more details of event dates, times etc. see your Club Handbook and the website diary.

Training: In addition to supporting our Coaches in their development (Level 1 and Level 2) we also provide opportunities for all anglers in the club to take part in learning events and add to their experience and knowledge of safe and effective angling. This can be as simple as new rigs, bait selection through to mark finding and some of the more involved casting and rig deployment.

Bait Support: we have our own eel tank for sand eels and freezers for storage of baits. This provides sand eels and frozen mackerel for use as bait. The Section also has ice making facilities to keep fish and bait fresh.

The Angling Section is managed by a committee. Your committee can only provide events and support that meet your needs if you let us know your thoughts. You will understand that the committee are not able to read your minds so if you have thoughts, ideas and are able to support these in the club please share these with us. We will consider all ideas and work with anglers to develop these in your programme. The Angling Section committee meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month and the section holds an AGM along with social evenings throughout the year, dates of which are posted around the club and on the web site.

Busting some of the Jargon.

Angling Trust: The Angling Trust is the representative body for game, coarse and sea anglers in England. The Angling Trust members support the campaigns and legal action that they carry out to protect fish stocks and programmes to increase the number of anglers fishing for fun and in competitions. The Trust fights for the future of fishing, and is the national governing body recognised by Sport England and the Environment Agency.

Club Mark: Club Mark is an award system instigated by Sport England to encourage proper governance and structure to support development and growth of clubs particularly with respect to young people.

Angling Trust Licenced Coaches: The Angling Trust licences coaches in line with the requirements of Sports England, this means that they are trained in providing a safe, enjoyable environment that helps people develop the skills necessary to become proficient anglers. It also means that the Coaches are subject to DBS (formerly CRB) checks, carry appropriate first aid qualifications and appropriate insurance.
