Dinghy racing duty roster roles

Duties are booked via SCM, supporting roles for each event will be listed, you will need to login to the Members Area and select Duty roster.

Start hut OOD
The Officer of the Day (OOD) is in overall control and leads the race team for a race. They are responsible for the safety of the race, liaising with the competitors, checking the weather forecast, setting the race course, starting and finishing the race and making sure that results are recorded. During the race they will use a VHF radio to liaise with the clubs RIB/Jaffa/Workboat. The role is shore based when the event is run from the Club Start Hut or afloat in the Workboat, or suitable moored vessel when starting down the harbour.
Is it for you? To volunteer for this duty you should ideally be a fairly experienced racer or have been as Assistant OOD a few times. The Club runs training courses for members who wish to learn how be an OOD.

Start hut Assist. OOD
The Assist. OOD assists the OOD. They will help with flag, sound and light signals, record the sail numbers of any boats who start early, record each boats lap time and also the finishing time of each boat.
Is it for you? There are no particular skills or experience necessary to be able to carry out this duty and it is a great way to get involved in Club racing without being on the water. Someone who can assist with some of the duties outlined in the OOD brief and aspiring to be a club OOD should volunteer for this duty.

RIB Helm
A RIB Helm drives the Clubs RIB to support a race or training event. May need to do some mark laying for club racing under direction of the OOD. Either the Helm or the crew may be required on rare occasions to enter the water and the Helm is responsible to ensure at least one person is dressed to be able to do this. To ensure the safety of the competitors, they should stay afloat until stood down by the OOD.
Is it for you? All RIB Helms must hold a valid RYA Powerboat Level 2 licence (PB2).

RIB Crew
A RIB Crew assists the RIB Helm.
Is it for you? There are no particular skills or qualifications necessary to be a RIB Crew but you must be fit and healthy and dressed appropriately for the conditions. It is a great way to support Club racing and get out on the water.

Jaffa / Tango Helm
A Jaffa / Tango Helm drives one of the Clubs Rigiflex NewMatic 360's to support a race or training event. May need to do some mark laying for club racing under direction of the OOD. Either the Helm or the crew may be required on rare occasions to enter the water and the Helm is responsible to ensure at least one person is dressed to be able to do this. To ensure the competitors, they should stay afloat until stood down by the OOD.

Jaffa / Tango Crew
A Jaffa / Tango Crew assists the Jaffa/Tango Helm.
Is it for you? There are no particular skills or qualifications necessary to be a Jaffa / Tango Crew but you must be fit and healthy and dressed appropriately for the conditions. It is a great way to support Club racing and get out on the water.

Workboat helm
A Workboat Helm drives the clubs 18' displacement diesel workboat to support a race or training event.
Is it for you? All Workboat helms must hold a valid RYA Powerboat Level 2 licence (PB2).

Workboat crew
A Workboat Crew assists the Workboat helm.
Is it for you? There are no particular skills or qualifications necessary to be a Workboat Crew but you must be fit and healthy and dressed appropriately for the conditions. It is a great way to support Club racing and get out on the water.

Beachmaster
For Open meetings and Junior events, the Beachmaster organises the launching and recovery of boats and the storage of launching trollies. They also liaise by VHF radio with the OOD and Safety boats afloat.
Is it for you? There are no particular skills or experience required to do this duty, good organisation and communication skills would be an advantage.
