RYA Day skipper and Yacht Master Coastal & Offshore (Shorebased) - March / April 2026
The training committee has reviewed all the options and come up with what we feel is a good solution a sort of hybrid option. Ardent Training have offered us their courses on a commission basis, and we will use the commission to fund some drop-in training sessions on the most challenging sections of the course. These will be scheduled at regular intervals, probably fortnightly, over a three month period. Students will sign up with Ardent for their chosen level, and the drop-ins will be arranged to give you a focus to complete the course within a set time. We will plan a social event at the end of the three months at which certificates will be awarded and will also schedule in a day for the exams. These can be done at home, but must be invigilated by an instructor if you wish to endorse your qualification for any kind of commercial or training purposes in the future.
What this means is that there will be a focused period in which to cover the material, with support at the club and some camaraderie with others on the course to provide encouragement. It also has the advantage that courses can be run concurrently so we can have people doing Yachtmaster and Day Skipper courses together, and we will attempt to have two instructors at each drop-in. In addition, for experienced sailors, it means that the straightforward elements of the course, such as parts of the boat, can be done at you own pace. My personal experience of online theory was that some parts of it I already knew thoroughly, and this avoids the frustration of sitting in a classroom being taught things you already know inside out
